If you’re an interiors nut, love sinking into a history book or are fanatical about architecture, you’ll want to add Open House Dublin to your diary for October.

A fascinating and truly immersive annual event, Open House provides the ideal chance to indulge your architectural and historical curiosity by taking a closer look at some of the true heritage buildings of Ireland’s capital. From 13th-15th October 2017, supported by the Irish Architecture Foundation, some of the most fascinating areas in Dublin will throw open their doors and invite you in to explore. Open House unveils not only buildings which would seem to have significant design features, but also some unexpected gems, making it the perfect excuse for an autumn getaway to Dublin for design-lovers everywhere.

The three day Open House event is self-described as “the best weekend of urban and architectural discovery you will ever experience” – a sentiment that we wholeheartedly agree with! All of the tours are completely admission free, and it’s hard to argue with that sort of endorsement, so here are a few of the top venues to ensure you take a look at. Trinity College Dublin – A Walk Through Time

 

Ireland’s oldest University is providing ample opportunity to take a stroll through time and uncover the many secrets of this historic destination. Tours take place on Saturday 15th October and Sunday 16th October between 11am-12pm.

Temple Bar Gallery & Studios

A vibrant artists’ community in the heart of Dublin city centre, the building is home to 30 artists studious providing professional visual artists with a place to exhibit their work. With a rich collection of both Irish and International artists, the redesigned space has an industrial edge with a superb Atrium which is worth viewing for any architecture fan. See the building on Saturday 15th October between 11am – 5pm.

Royal Irish Academy of Music

In the stunning Georgian Quarter of Dublin, this building at No. 36 Westland Row has played host to the Royal Irish Academy of Music since 1871. A beautiful Georgian house with granite façade and red brick on the upper layers features original features such as the stunning front step lamps and brass-bound front door, as well as many historic pieces of marble and mahogany, and an exquisite stone staircase. Easily accessible from the Stephen’s Green Hotel, part of the O’Callaghan Hotel Group, visits are available between 2pm – 5pm on Saturday 15th October.

The Oratory

This beautiful hidden gem features some remarkable Celtic Revival art, painted by Sister Concepta Lynch. Her work began in 1920, before completion in 1936 within the Dominican Convent – and has been lovingly preserved ever since due to its artistic significance. Tours available Sunday 16th October between 12pm – 5pm.
